This month's BOSS BABE spotlight is on Berkley Sweetapple @ladyjlife from Lady J Blog! She is one smart lady and did I mention she's a lawyer? No big deal! Berkley works full time in Law, runs her blog and is a Momma to her son Tripp! I met Berkley virtually while taking the same online course all about us building our empires in the online space. Berkley is in the process of doing a bit of a rebrand and will be launching her store shortly. Her shop will have legal contracts and templates geared towards female entrepreneurs! It's the wild wild west out there in the online space and we need to make sure our buns are covered; just saying.
I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I have!
First, off tell us a bit about you and when you started your blog Lady J?
Hi! I was born and raised in South Florida and moved back right after I graduated law school in Boston about five years ago. I started my blog shortly after law school graduation as a creative outlet. I didn’t really feel like I fit in law school - I didn’t care about joining a big law firm or competing in moot court or joining the law review. I loved learning but didn’t feel like I fit into the typical law school path. I was just as interested in cooking and decorating my apartment and gossiping with friends, as I was in memorizing Supreme Court cases. So I started my blog as a way to merge my interests. I wanted to teach women about all of the good stuff I learned in law school in a way that related to their actual lives.
What made you want to start a blog?
I have always enjoyed writing, so blogging seemed like a natural step! I love the online community of women I have met through blogging. There are so many ambitious, creative, thoughtful women out there sharing their stories.
What’s your WHY?
I want to empower women to embrace whatever “success” means to them. My goal is to educate women on how the law affects their lives and businesses so that they can follow their passions with peace of mind.
What’s your favourite part about Law?
Having legal knowledge gives me the power to stand up for myself. I don’t take a lot of sh*t from people. Because I have a legal background I know my rights and when I should take a stand. Whether that is enforcing a contract I signed or telling a tow company that booted my car that their tow signs don’t meet local code requirements, I like knowing the rules and being able to use them to my advantage.
What has been your biggest challenge with working full time, being a mom and running your blog? And how did it make you stronger?
Balancing all of the things is a constant challenge. The biggest challenge for me is definitely just feeling like I am doing a good job as a mom. I can be hard on myself and think, “I’m not spending enough time with Tripp” or “I’m not patient enough.” Sometimes you just have to work on the positive self-talk and say, “you’re doing a great job and you’re going to raise a good man.” There’s only so much you can do in a day, and I think just keeping that in perspective helps a lot.
What BOSS BABE do you look up to?
If you walk into my house, you’ll very quickly be able to tell that I have a minor obsession with Caitlin Wilson designs. She is a mother of four who has also built a successful textile and design business (the best rugs). I also love Rachel Hollis. I have been reading her book “Girl, Wash Your Face.” I love following pretty Instagram accounts, but I feel like I’m drawn to boss babes who really share their struggles with balancing work and kids, and overcoming adversity.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
They say if you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans. I could never have imagined where my life is now, five years ago. Life is full of curve-balls and unexpected turns. One of my biggest challenges is letting go of some of that control and seeing where life takes me. In five years I hope to be happy, healthy, and successful! In terms of my blog, I’d like to have an online course to help female entrepreneurs handle the legal side of running their online businesses and blogs.
Some FUN STUFF!
What is your favourite junk food?
I have a really hard time not eating Tripp’s grilled cheese sandwiches.
Where’s your favourite place to shop?
Anthropologie, Caitlin Wilson, Nordstrom.
Where’s your favourite place travel?
My happy place is Buenos Aires, Argentina. I studied abroad there when I was 20, and went back when I was 22. I have a trip planned to return in the near future :)
Last thoughts or insights?
There’s a lot of pressure in the world to be a certain type of person. I think the beauty in each of us is that we’re all unique! I love reading blogs with a fresh perspective. I hope that by being myself on social media, and sharing the ups and downs, I can show other women that it’s ok to just be yourself!
